Josh Thomas was born and raised in Florida. Tampa, to be specific. It wasn’t until 2014 that I discovered I loved growing plants. I quickly figured out that a lot of advice on the internet does not pertain to Florida and its unique climate.
That’s when the idea was born for FL gardening. I wanted to share my journey of gardening with others. I want to share my success stories but I also want to share my failures because those are extremely valuable to anybody new to growing plants in Florida.
I mostly focus on helping other Florida gardeners grow food in their yards. That could be fruit trees, vegetables, or outside-the-box crops which are popular in other parts of the world but are lesser known in the States.
In order to take my knowledge to the next level I began looking for courses specific to Florida gardening and a few stood out to me. The first one is through the FNGLA, and that is the FCHP certificate. That stands for the FNGLA certified Horticulture Professional. This course is the industry standard for horticulture knowledge on plant and pest identification and landscape management.
The next course I invested in was a permaculture design course. I love the idea of permaculture and how it can apply to everything in life, not just the garden. The course I took was hosted in St. Petersburg, Florida by Koreen Brennan who has many years of gardening and design experience. It was a wonderful class where I got to meet a lot of amazing people and learn a ton of new, very useful information.
